NEW BCSSA MEMBER SESSION
Human Resource Management – Making Connections: Michelle Guillou – Director Human Resources Langley SD35
As a recently appointed Assistant Superintendent or Director of Human Resources, you will have the opportunity and responsibility to build and maintain working relationships with a variety of partner groups. In your new role, you will support your Senior Leadership Team, Directors, District Principals and School Administrators to strategically manage human resources to achieve quality education for all students. This session will touch on making connections, navigating the union, forming a relationship with your BCPSEA contact, and key learning in Human Resources to help you work respectfully within the framework of collective and contractual agreements. Come prepared to explore Dimension 6: Human Resources Development and Management from the BCSSA Dimensions of Practice.
Presenter: Michelle Guillou has over 30 years of experience in the Public Education Sector as a teacher and principal, and is currently the Director of Human Resources in the Langley School District. Michelle teaches Human Resource Management classes for Masters of Educational Leadership programs in two universities and was involved in the development of Administrator Growth Plans in Langley. Michelle is a trained facilitator in Fierce Conversations for the Langley School District and continues to provide educational opportunities for new and aspiring Administrators in the area of Human Resource Management.

NEWLY APPOINTED SUPERINTENDENT SESSION
Financial Literacy 101
This session will outline the key role for the Superintendent/CEO in financial and risk management in school districts. The agenda will include:
- the calendar for financial reporting and key information in those reports.
- risk management through policy, planning, budgeting, reporting and audits
- working with your Secretary-Treasurer to ensure financial understanding throughout the district
- Financial questions that the Superintendent should be able to answer
There will be time for questions and discussion.
Our presenter for this session is Joan Axford.
Joan Axford is a professional accountant (C.P.A.) with over 35 years of experience in public education finance. Joan is a retired Secretary Treasurer and held the position of Director of School Finance with the Ministry of Education.
Most recently, Mrs. Axford was appointed by the Minister of Education to the Implementation Advisory Committee to advise on the funding allocation system. She has also advised on the Financial Health Working Group, Leadership Advisory Committee, Service Delivery Project and is the author of the report entitled Review of the Administration Costs and Operating Reserves for BC Public Schools

NEW BCSSA MEMBER SESSION
Compassionate Systems Leadership
For several years, the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District has been working on an SEL framework with the guidance of Dr. Kimberley Schonert-Reichl and Dr. Molly Lawlor of the University of British Columbia. Teachers, support staff and administrators have all participated in this initiative, which has as its goal the embedding of social and emotional learning in all practices, both inside and outside of the classroom.
Our presenters for this session - Shannon Derinzy and Jovo Bikic are Assistant Superintendents for the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District. Both Jovo and Shannon have trained with Peter Senge and Mette Boell on Compassionate Systems (CS) through M.I.T. and believe the work within their portfolios aligns perfectly with the CS Framework.
During this session Shannon and Jovo will speak to the power of Compassionate Systems, how the CS Framework was implemented in School District No. 42, the successes and challenges of this implementation, and what steps others may take to implement this framework in their district(s). Shannon and Jovo will also facilitate a self-reflection and connection exercise in breakout groups, so please bring your journals.
This session will be presented via Zoom on Thursday, November 19th from 4 - 5pm and will be repeated Friday, November 20th from 8 - 9am. There is no charge, but please register below.
