BCSSA New Member Session presented by Rod Allen
Transformational Leadership in Uncertain Times. The need for strong transformational leadership is more important than ever during times of upheaval and disruption. Vision, clarity, and coherence are key leadership components that can help leaders set a course through the turbulence.
Rod Allen, recently retired Superintendent for the Prince George School District and the Cowichan Valley School District and formerly the Assistant Deputy Minister / Chief Superintendent with the BC Ministry of Education was the architect of British Columbia’s transformation to personalized learning and lead the development of the transformed BC curriculum. Under Allen’s leadership, BC became a major contributor to global transformation efforts and within BC he set a clear path for education transformation – ensuring students have the opportunity to explore their passions and take ownership for their learning.
He is currently the Senior Advisor to Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Deeper Learning Project and is actively involved in the Global Education Leadership Program. Rod was recently a Special Advisor to the Minister of Education in BC. He is an instructor at Vancouver Island University on Transformational Leadership and Reconciliation. Rod lead the Knowledge and Skills team at the OECD in the development of the Education 2030 Framework. He has recently worked with the Latvia (Escola 2030), The Ministry of Education in Portugal, the Aspen Institute, the World Bank, and the Canadian School Board Association. He is a member of the SET Advisory Board at Royal Roads University and an advisor to the Vancouver Foundation. Rod is president of Nourish Cowichan, a non-profit that provides school meals for children in the Cowichan Valley.
Prior to joining government he was Superintendent for School District 54 (Bulkley Valley). Rod has taught at most grade levels in British Columbia, where he advanced through school and district leadership positions.
Newly Appointed Superintendent Session presented by Kevin Godden
Governance for Learning: This will be an opportunity for superintendents to explore this question: “How do superintendents support their boards (and senior team) to stay consistently focused on student learning?” Kevin will reach out to registered superintendents to identify successes, challenges and curiosities that will make our dialogue most valuable.
Kevin Godden has served children in the public education system for over 36 years He retired in 2023 after 13 years as superintendent of Abbotsford. He has provided leadership in several areas over the course of his career, most notably in inclusive education, governance, in strategy management, and as secretary-treasurer. He completed his doctorate in educational leadership, focusing on how senior educational teams drive system transformation for deeper student learning. Kevin is an unapologetic anti-racist and has dedicated his life to educational justice.
